The NC Society of engineers offers the Ronald C. Harrell Scholarship in the amount of $5000. It is awarded each year by the Society to deserving undergraduate college students in a qualified engineering program for rising sophomores, juniors or seniors.  The scholarship is awarded based on a need basis for exceptional students with a successful scholastic and community accomplishments aligning with career goals to practice engineering in North Carolina.  

Ronnie was an outstanding member of the NCSE and provided valuable leadership and guidance as president, district director, and while serving as chair of multiple executive committees.

As recognition of his timeless dedication, NCSE first, in 1999, elected Ron as the highly regarded
NCSE Outstanding Engineer and later unanimously resolved to honor his legacy by creating the Ronald C. Harrell Scholarship.

The Harrell Scholarship will provide assistance with tuition, fees, and books for a full time student who has a declared major in Engineering or Engineering Technology. The recipient may reapply for consideration but eligibility shall be limited to four (4) semesters. Scholarship payments will be made directly to the school in the winner’s name.

The Scholarship Committee, under the direction of NCSE Board of Directors, will be the final authority on the scholarship winner and will be the responsible entity to interview, validate, select and award the scholarship.

Ronald C. Harrell Engineering Scholarship Instructions 2020

Scholarship Details

Scholarship Amount:  $5,000 (Payments are split evenly over two semesters of successful school work)
Application Deadline:  Must be received by Monday - May 31, 2021

Complete applications will be reviewed and graded.  The top applicants are invited to an in-person interview in early July.  



The winner will be chosen, in descending level of importance, according to:
1) Financial need
2) Desire to practice engineering in North Carolina
2) Academic merit
3) Application and/or Interviews


The winner and his/her immediate family will be the guest of the Society at the winter banquet for the official scholarship presentation.

​Requirements:
1. North Carolina resident and Full Time Undergraduate Student

2. United States citizen

3. Enrolled in Engineering or Engineering Technology at one of the following universities:
  • East Carolina University, Greenville, NC  
  • North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, NC
  • North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC
  • University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Charlotte, NC
  • Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, NC  
  • Appalachian State Engineering Physics Program, Boone, NC
  • Duke University, Durham, NC
  • Campbell University, Buies Creek, NC

4. Students currently completing one of the North Carolina Engineering Transfer Programs and are accepted at one of the previously mentioned engineering schools are qualified to apply.

Transfer Programs:
  • University of North Carolina @ Asheville
  • University of North Carolina @ Wilmington
  • University of North Carolina  @ Pembroke
  • N.C. State University / Craven Community College Partnership Program
  • Guilford Technical Community College
  
5. Rising sophomore, junior, senior and graduate student in good academic standing.

6. Current freshmen who will have completed the academic year by the scholarship deadline are eligible.
Application Instructions
1. Start the Online Application

​2. The most recent academic transcripts from your college need to be sent directly to the Scholarship Committee:
​ TRANSCRIPT REQUEST FORM

3. Two (2) letters of recommendation completed by individuals who can validate your character.  Your references will be emailed a form for completion by the Scholarship Committee upon submission of your application. 

4. The Scholarship Committee will be responsible for securing the completed applications, validating the information, checking references as needed, and personally interviewing a “set” of finalists as they deem necessary.

5. The Scholarship Committee will be the final authority on the scholarship winner and will be responsible for notifying the winner.

6. The scholarship will be open to all qualified students. Exception: Immediate family members of NCSE Members are not eligible to apply.

7. Application and all necessary paperwork should be submitted no later than May 1, 2020.

Note: Please remember that the transcripts should be sent directly to the Scholarship Committee from your school. Documents sent to the applicant and forwarded to the committee can be disallowed at the discretion of the committee.
